Training Transfer Support
Ensures strategies are in place to support application of learning on the job.
Standard
Training programs incorporate deliberate strategies and support mechanisms (before, during, and after the training event) to facilitate and encourage the application of learned knowledge and skills back in the workplace or relevant context.
Rationale
Maximizing the return on training investment requires bridging the gap between the training environment and the application environment, ensuring behavior change and performance improvement.
Evidence/Indicators
- Documented training transfer strategies and tools used (e.g., action planning templates, manager briefing guides, job aids, follow-up coaching protocols, peer support groups).
- Examples of pre-training activities involving managers/supervisors.
- Examples of post-training support activities (e.g., scheduled follow-ups, online forums, booster sessions).
- Integration of application-focused activities within the training program itself.
Metrics
- % of programs incorporating documented pre- and post-training transfer support activities.
- Trainee self-reported confidence/preparedness score for applying skills post-training.
- Manager satisfaction score with trainee's ability to apply learning (from follow-up surveys).
- Completion rate of post-training action plans or application assignments.
Performance Levels
- Non-Compliant (Not Applied): No consideration or support for training transfer is evident in program design or follow-up. No efforts made.
- Developing (Basic): Minimal or informal efforts to encourage transfer (e.g., simple encouragement, basic action plan template with no follow-up). Minimal follow-up.
- Meets Standard (Developing): Programs include specific activities (e.g., structured action planning) and some documented post-training support (e.g., email reminders, resource access) to facilitate transfer. Some structured support.
- Exceeds Standard (Advanced/Fully Integrated): Systematically embeds comprehensive transfer strategies throughout the training process (before, during, after), actively involving managers, providing ongoing support (coaching, resources, communities of practice), and actively monitoring application. Comprehensive system.
